MAIL-IN EXAFS SERVICE

The Mail-in EXAFS Service is another facility provided at the National Synchrotron Light Source, Brookhaven National Laboratory. This is offered to any person interested in doing X-ray absorption spectroscopy but has no time or other reasons to go to a synchrotron and do it by themselves. You can prepare your samples according to the directions given on the Thickness Measurements page, mount it on a standard holder and mail it to us with all possible details. You should always include some standard samples along with your unknowns for your data analysis and its interpretation. We will collect EXAFS and XANES data for you at room temperature or low cryogenic temperatures, as the need may be, and we will return the samples to you, along with the data, in any format you specify.

At the moment we are doing this in transmission mode only.

The energy range for K-absorption edges is from P (2.142 KeV) to La (38.931 KeV) and for LIII- absorption edge is from Zr (2.220 KeV) to U (17.163 KeV) + all other trans-uranium elements.

Following are the EXAFS scans of some standard foils taken at Beamline X18B.

Chromium Manganese Iron Cobalt Nickel Copper Zinc Platinum LIII

PlatinumL II Germanium Niobium Molybdenum Palladium Silver

Data Base EXAFS Standards

The standard foils and filters available at the NSLS are listed at the NSLS-EXAFS Equipment Pool. If the Mail-in EXAFS Users prefer they can ask for doing EXAFS/XANES of those standards along with their samples.

CHARGES FOR MAIL-IN EXAFS SERVICE

Actual cost to provide the service will be billed. Please contact Syed Khalid for an estimate of the costs to provide this service. The total time to run the samples depends upon the concentration of the samples, detector and equipment setup and other requirements of your experiments. The samples can be done when the X-ray operational beam time is available at X18B or at X19A. Please see the schedules of these beamlines at the X18B Home page.

IMPORTANT: To run your samples you must have a BNL Operating Account for the NSLS.

How to setup Operating Account

The Rates are about $ 100.00 / hour.
