Guidance for Emergency Response for NSLS Staff, Users, and Visitors
Building Emergency
- The sounding of the fire alarm bells indicates a condition within a BNL building that warrants the evacuation of
personnel within the building. All personnel who do not have a specifically assigned response during an emergency are
expected to evacuate the building by the nearest safe exit and report to the assembly area.
- The assembly area for a building evacuation at the NSLS is the east lawn in the front of the NSLS main lobby
entrance. It is important that everyone report to this location as an aid in accounting for building occupants and to
assist in providing information on the nature of the emergency and conditions in the building.
Laboratory Site Emergency
The Laboratory maintains a site emergency plan and has established communication links and signals for providing information
for any event that requires emergency actions in a portion or throughout the entire site. Should such an emergency occur at
the Laboratory the following emergency signals may be sounded:
- Continuous Siren: Continuous sounding of the BNL siren for 5 minutes calls for all non-emergency personnel to
report to the designated Assembly Area and await further instructions. (Note: The laboratory tests the site sirens every
Monday at 12 Noon.)
- Intermittent Siren: Intermittent sounding of the BNL siren for 5 minutes signals that all employees shall
evacuate the Laboratory site immediately.
The assembly area for a Laboratory emergency for NSLS personnel is the main
lobby of Building 725. The second floor seminar room may also be used if additional space is required.
