HBCU WorkshopJuly 23-25, 2008
Purpose and ScopeBrookhaven National Laboratory's Office of Educational Programs (OEP) and the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) have developed a consortium of professors from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to provide NSLS access to HBCU faculty. The second annual workshop for this consortium will be held at Brookhaven National Laboratory this summer. AgendaThe workshop will consist of introductory lectures on synchrotron science, techniques, and operations. Hands-on experimental activities will be offered to participants using a variety of beamlines. Additionally, there will be a writing tutorial focused on the development of competitive beamtime proposals for independent research at the NSLS. Intended AudienceThe workshop is open to all tenured or tenure-track faculty at an HBCU. CostTransportation, housing, and meals will be provided by Brookhaven National Laboratory. The National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, is a national user research
facility funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Science. The NSLS operates two electron
storage rings: an X-Ray ring and a Vacuum UltraViolet (VUV) ring which provide intense light spanning the electromagnetic
spectrum from the infrared through x-rays. Each year over 2300 scientists from universities, industries and government
labs perform research at the NSLS.
