September 7, 2007 New BNL Alert System LaunchedOne of the lessons learned from past emergencies, including recent school-related tragedies, is that timely communications are crucial in emergency situations. The Laboratory is now launching a new text-alert system that will enhance our ability to get messages to staff during an emergency. This new, voluntary subscription system will send text alerts to mobile phones/PDAs/other devices, or to non-BNL email accounts, allowing our employees, users, and guests to receive urgent notifications when they are between buildings, away from their computer and office phone, or even off site. The alert system will be used to inform subscribers about high-priority incidents, like site emergencies, Laboratory closings, severe weather events, and vehicle accidents that impact one of the main Lab roads, entrances, or exits. Text alerts will be limited to high-priority incidents and an occasional test message (about twice per year). Note that standard text messaging rates for mobile devices will apply. Subscribers can easily delete or renew their subscriptions, so facility users who are on site for a limited amount of time can subscribe for the duration of their visit, then unsubscribe when they leave. Employees, users, and guests can subscribe to the text alert system by filling out the simple web form. Just enter the email address of your mobile device or alternate email account in the first box, enter your name below that (optional), hit “subscribe,” then reply to the automatically generated email sent to your mobile device or email account. You can register multiple notification addresses if you desire, one at a time. If you don’t know the email address of your mobile device, try following the guidance below or check with your carrier:
