September 7, 2007 NSLS Work Attire RequirementsIn response to the current DOE Integrated Safety Management (ISM) audit at BNL, the Laboratory Director has issued a memorandum pertaining to allowable attire in work areas that has an immediate impact on the NSLS. All personnel are required to wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts, and closed-toe shoes in laboratory and industrial areas at BNL. This applies to all staff, visitors, contractors, and users, and is to be implemented immediately. For the NSLS, we interpret this to mean that the attire described above must be worn on the NSLS experimental floor, in all laboratories, mechanical equipment rooms, and tech areas (this also includes the basement of building 535 and the tunnel leading to and from the NSLS). The described attire must be worn in all parts of buildings 726, 727, and 729 (Source Development Lab). Specific locations of personal protective equipment (PPE) areas at the NSLS can be found here. Thank you for helping us to meet the attire requirements for work on the experimental floor. We recognize, however, that some visiting users are here for the next few days without the required clothing. We ask that you do whatever you can to dress with long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and enclosed shoes, but if you are unable to meet this requirement and your work on the floor involves no chemical use, no cryogen use, and no material handling, we can work with you to find an acceptable solution. Feel free to forward any questions, concerns or comments to Andrew Ackerman, ESH/Q Division Manager (Ext. 5431). |
