Flammable liquids used at the NSLS shall be handled in accordance with the Fire Safety Subject Area to minimize the likelihood of fires. NSLS staff and users should consult with NSLS ESH Staff for assistance in utilizing the requirements of this Subject Area. Several requirements from this Subject Area are worth highlighting:
Always take care when handling flammable liquids. These materials create the potential for fire or explosion and must be handled with caution. Work place quantities shall be kept to the minimum necessary for day-to-day operations and shall not exceed maximum quantities in the Fire Safety Subject Area (see Section 16).
Original or secondary containers shall provide content identification and hazard warnings in accordance with Working With Chemicals Subject Area.
Warning signs alerting emergency personnel to the presence of flammable liquids shall be posted in all entrances and storage areas in accordance with BNL Emergency Preparedness Subject Area.
Store flammable and other hazardous liquids in a secondary tray so that any spillage will be contained and will not enter sinks, drains, water or soil. Spills of chemicals or chemical wastes must be immediately addressed to prevent injury to personnel or releases to the environment. This includes the release of chemicals into a sink or floor drain in even small quantities. For advice on dealing with minor spills, contact NSLS ES&H Staff or the NSLS Control Room at x2550. Take prompt action to prevent spills from discharging to floor drains or sinks if you are familiar with the hazards involved and feel comfortable doing so. Any discharge to a drain, or to the outdoors, must be reported to the Lab emergency response number (x2222) and to the NSLS Control Room Operator (x2550) or member of the NSLS ES&H staff. Definitions for minor and major spills, and guidance on how to handle them are provided in NSLS Operations Group Chemical Spill Response .
Disposal of flammable liquids wastes and oily rags shall be in accordance with NSLS PRM 7.0.0.
