Cutting and welding operations produce many potential ignition sources and represent a significant fire hazard. Information regarding cutting and welding requirements is available in the BNL SBMS Fire Safety Subject Area section on Cutting and Welding.
Designated Cutting and Welding Areas can be established in areas where on-going activities involving cutting and welding occur. Review and approval of the Designated Cutting and Welding Area is required by the BNL Fire/Rescue Group. Currently there is one designated Cutting and Welding Area at the NSLS complex, located in Building 727. Establishing a designated cutting and welding area requires following the procedure in the Fire Safety Subject Area to obtain the Designated Area Cutting and Welding permit.
Any cutting and welding that takes place outside the designated welding area also requires a permit. This Cutting and Welding Outside Designated Area Permit is listed in the SBMS Fire Safety Subject Area. Supervisors responsible for work involving a cutting or welding operation are responsible to acquire a permit prior to beginning the activity and must abide by the requirements established in the permit until the work is completed. Supervisors must also assure that all training requirements have been fulfilled.
The NSLS Training Coordinator can schedule you for relevant training, e.g. Fire Extinguisher, Fire Extinguisher Practical and Fire Watch.
