Lonny is Head of the NSLS Beamline R&D Section. He is also Spokesperson for beamline X25. He is also a Co-PI of the PXRR -- A Resource for Macromolecular Crystallography at the NSLS, which is sponsored by NIH NCRR.

Lonny Berman investigates and makes possible novel aspects and uses for synchrotron x-ray diffraction and photoemission. He develops x-ray optics and related instrumentation, with careful attention to matching to source properties and experimental requirements. He also maximizes efficient use of synchrotron beam time by users through program coordination, instrumentation selection, and beam line setup, to allow experiments to execute with a minimum of manpower and support staff intervention. Lonny works toward attainment of an environment in which NSLS PRTs cooperate, minimizing redundancy.

In addition, Lonny plays a part-time role in experimental facilities development for NSLS-II.
