Dr. Jih-Perng Hu, a New York-licensed professional engineer (PE), is presently the group leader of vacuum engineering in the mechanical engineering section of the National Synchrotron Light Source. Dr. Hu started working at BNL in 1991 as nuclear safety engineer of the then-decommissioned High Flux Beam Reactor and the Medical Research Reactor. Before joining BNL, he was an environmental scientist for two years at the worldwide consulting firm Dames & Moore, conducting nuclear site characterization for Midwest Compact, a Superfund Project sponsored by the U.S. Congress.

During 1983-1989, Dr. Hu was an assistant professor of Mechanical Engineering at Manhattan College, NY, and chief reactor supervisor of its research, teaching, and training nuclear reactor. He received his B.S. (1976) from the Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering Department of the National Cheng-Kung University (Taiwan, ROC), and his M.S. (1980) and Ph.D. (1983) from the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department of the State University of NY at Buffalo.
