Radiological Training

Sealed Source (Americium-241) Users and Custodians

Researchers at NSLS use a sealed source that is commonly known as a "pocket synchrotron" to generate X-rays of specific energies in order to calibrate detectors. The Americium-241 sources are designated as "Accountable" based on activity levels listed in the Code of Federal Regulations (10CFR835) and training is required by all personnel who use an Am-241 source.

NSLS users of AM-241 sealed sources must complete the training listed below and contact an NSLS Source Custodian who will verify your training before the source is issued:

  • GERT or higher
  • Am-241 Sealed Source User Awareness Training (LS-RAD-AM241)

NSLS Source Custodians of AM-241 sealed sources must complete the following training:

  • Radiological Worker I or higher
  • Sealed Rad Source Control for Source Custodians (HP-RWT-600)
  • Am-241 Sealed Source User Awareness Training (LS-RAD-AM241)

General Employee Radiological Training (GERT)

General Employee Radiological Training (TQ-GERT) is required for almost everyone working at the NSLS, including employees, users, contractors, and vendors. After completion of this course you can receive personnel dosimetry (TLD) and enter Controlled Areas, outside of posted Radiological Areas, without a trained escort. Refer to the BNL Training Website for Training Requirements.

Reciprocity for GERT (TQ-GERT) may be granted to guest facility users upon showing proof of training (e.g. certificate or card) issued from another DOE facility provided the user also successfully completed the NSLS Safety Module (LS-ESH-SAFETY) on or after July 6, 2006. Requests for reciprocity are made by contacting User Administration after the safety module has been completed. Reciprocity must be approved by the NSLS Training Coordinator using the Request for Reciprocal Credit for GERT form. All other guests (non-users) may be exempted from the course content for GERT (TQ-GERT) but must complete the Challenge Exam for GERT. Exemptions and Reciprocity will not be granted if the training is due to expire within three months.

GERT Challenge Exam: A web-based General Employee Radiological Training Challenge Exam (HP-RWT001CB) is available for re-qualification. If you are unable to pass the exam, you will be required to take the web course after 24 hours have passed.

Study Guides are available.

Radiological Worker 1

Most NSLS users and employees are not required to take Rad Worker 1. If you are required to complete Rad Worker 1, you have also satisfied the requirements for GERT. Refer to the BNL Training Website for Training Requirements.

Rad Worker I is web-based. For course credit, both Part I and the Challenge Exam must be successfully completed:

  • Radiological Worker Challenge Exam (HP-RWT-150CB)
  • Radiological Worker - Part One (TQ-RW1-PART1)

Rad Worker I Challenge Exam: For re-qualification, a web-based Radiological Worker Challenge Exam (HP-RWT-150CB) is available. If you are unable to pass the exam, you will be required to take the web course after 24 hours have passed and re-take the Challenge Exam.
