Contractors, Consultants, and Vendors


Construction Contractor refers to contractors who will perform any of the following types of work construction and/or hazardous work:

  • Construction of infrastructure, buildings, or internal building components (including hutch work)
  • Open flame operations (cutting, welding, brazing, soldering)
  • Use of cranes, forklifts, or rigging equipment
  • Constructing or modifying electrically-powered equipment
  • Working "on or near" energized, exposed components or parts (equal to or greater than 50 volts)
  • Confined space entry
  • Performing excavation activities or working in trenches
  • Use of a respirator
  • Class IIIB or IV Laser use
  • Entry into HAZWOPER exclusion areas
  • Entry into Noise Areas
  • Entry into Asbestos certification areas
  • Any other hazardous operations as defined by work planning

Follow Instructions for Construction Contractors


Non-Construction Contractor refers to contractors, technical contractors, consultants, vendors, and sales people who will perform any of the following type of work:

  • Stocking food vending machines
  • Performing maintenance, repair, service, installation, or warranty repair work of equipment
  • Vendors and sales people who meet with a specified BNL contact to discuss purchases

Non-Construction "One-Day" Contractors

If all of the following conditions are met, follow Instructions for Non-Construction, One-Day Contractors:

  • The contractor will be onsite for only one day during a one-year period and will perform non-construction type of work or services, and
  • The contractor will be escorted at all times (Note: Escorts must be either a BNL employee or Local Contact, and must be a citizen of a non-sensitive country), and
  • The contractor is a U.S. citizen.

Non-Construction "Short-Term" Contractors

If all of the following conditions are met, follow Instructions for Non-Construction, Short-Term Contractors:

  • The contractor will be onsite for 3 days or less during a one-year period and will perform non-construction type of work or services, and
  • The contractor will be escorted at all times (Note: Escorts must be either a BNL employee or Local Contact, and must be a citizen of a non-sensitive country), and
  • The contractor is a U.S. citizen.

Non-Construction "Long-Term" Contractors

If any of the following conditions apply, follow Instructions for Non-Construction, Long-Term Contractors:

  • The contractor will be onsite for 3 days or more during a one-year period and will perform non-construction type of work or services, or
  • The contractor will require unescorted access to the NSLS experimental floor, or
  • The contractor is a foreign national.
