Description: The workshop will cover different crystallization methods from the most standard vapor diffusion methods to more advanced techniques. A short introduction to the crystallization process will be followed by a series of hands-on experiments. Participants will be able to crystallize there own PSI and PSII proteins and use the lipid cubic phase to crystallize their own samples. The goal is for all participants to be able to try out the different methods under discussion.

Two topics will be covered in five practicals:

  1. Soluble Proteins
    • Marie Claude Marchand (Nextal) - "The Vapor Diffusion Method"
    • Ana Belen Moradela Merlo (University of Granada) - "Protein Crystallization by the Counter Diffusion Method"


  2. Membrane Proteins
    • Petra Fromme (Arizona State University) - "Crystallization of PSI and PSII, a phase diagram problem"
    • Peter Nollert (deCODE Genetics, Inc) - "Crystallization in Lipid Cubic Phase"
    • Naomi Chayen - "Screening and optimization techniques using oils, seeding and other means"

The workshop is limited to 20 participants due to its hands-on character. It is on a first come first serve basis. Participants are welcome to bring their own samples.

All participants of this workshop need a VALID BNL GUEST NUMBER since the workshop will take place on the experimental floor. Please make sure to register for both: the workshop and to obtain a valid BNL Guest appointment. Due to increased site security foreign nationals need to allow at least 30 days for security clearance.
