Description: Safety has become a highly visible and very
important issue in DOE research facilities. Entire facilities have
been shut down and individual experiments have been terminated
because of safety related problems. There is considerable risk of
loss of beam time or access to the facility if safety issues are not
properly addressed.
This workshop is devoted to review and discussion of electrical
safety issues in a research facility. Electrical safety has become a
focal point of recent safety discussions at the NSLS and the subject
of rapid change. This workshop will provide in-depth discussion of
current issues important to the research community and permit
discussion of practical solutions to some difficult problems.
The following topics will be discussed at the workshop:
· Standards and Guidelines for R&D Electrical Safety
· Electrical Hazard Classification (DC, AC, Batteries, etc. .
.)
· Review of 2004 NFPA 70E - Electrical Safety in the
Workplace
· Electrical Personal Protective Equipment in the R&D
Environment
· Methods of Electrical Energy Isolation and Verification
· Electrical Safety Training for Researchers
· Unlisted Electrical Equipment Inspection and Approval
· Review of Electrical Incidents at the NSLS and Lessons learned
