Workshop 3

"Dynamics of Materials in Extreme Fields"

Date: Monday, May 19, 2008

Organizer(s):
Lawrence Carr (NSLS-BNL) carr@bnl.gov
Dario Arena (NSLS-BNL) darena@bnl.gov

Location: Berkner Hall, Bldg. 488, Conference Room C

Description:
Materials can exhibit a variety of novel physical processes when exposed to very strong electric and magnetic fields. The polarization state of ferroelectric and multiferroic materials can be switched by a sufficiently large transient electric field. Electron spins will precess and re-align in a magnetic field, affecting the overall magnetization state of a system. Competition between spin and orbital degrees of freedom will influence ordering phenomena in complex oxides. Cyclotron resonance and transitions between Landau levels can become sufficiently strong to induce quantum phenomena and metal-insulator transitions.

This workshop will address recent advances in studying the dynamical properties of materials under extreme field (electric and/or magnetic) conditions using synchrotron and linac-based radiation sources.
