User Support Staff

The following staff and committees are available to assist users. This section should be reviewed prior to arrival at NSLS as some services may require pre-notification or set up.

Beamline Development & Support

The Beamline Development and Support section provides support to NSLS beamlines on the VUV-IR and X-ray storage rings assists in the development of new beamlines and new beamline capabilities.

Beamline Staff

Beamline staff provide utilization support to their collaborators as well as to General Users. Assistance includes Beamline Orientation and Safety Awareness (BLOSA) training as well as scientific and technical support. The beamline scheduler can assist users and principal investigators with beamline information and requirements.

Building Manager

The Building Manager can assist with work planning and controls, work permits, lab and office space, long and short term storage, user services, recycling, cranes, forklifts, use of the machine shop, custodial services, repair and equipment services, and general assistance on the experimental floor.

Operations Staff

The Operations Section is tasked with providing beam to the users, performing accelerator computing, control, and operational functions, and assuring safe operations of the NSLS beamlines.

  • Operations Coordinators (OP COs)

Operations Coordinators ("OP COs") are on duty at all times except during extended shutdowns. OP COs inspect and unlock beamlines, post Safety Approval Forms, and ensure safety on the experimental floor. OP COs should be your first contact for questions or problems with interlocks, safety, shielding, vacuum, etc.

  • Machine Operators

Machine Operators (also known as Control Room Operators) are on duty at all times except during extended shutdowns. Machine Operators coordinate the response to any emergency at the NSLS. The public address system and the building evacuation alarm are operated from the Control Room. Call only when necessary.

Environment, Safety, Health & Quality Staff

The ES&H Staff at the NSLS can provide assistance to ensure work is conducted safely. Responsibilities include experimental safety review, waste management, approval of work planning permits, electrical safety, environmental compliance, quality assurance and control, ES&H safety inspections, chemical management, TLD personnel monitoring, radiological issues and measurements, ES&H reviews, and emergency planning,

Experimental Operations Manager

The Experimental Operations Manager coordinates operations with internal and external research groups and facility users, troubleshoots operational problems at beamlines, runs the weekly X-ray/VUV users meetings. The EOM also acts as User Liason providing users an interface with machine operations and NSLS and BNL staff.

Special Interest Groups (SPIGs)

Special Interest Group (SPIG) Representatives are elected to membership on the Users' Executive Committee and represent the diverse interest and needs of user communities such as EXAFS, imaging, biology, UV, etc.

Training Coordinator

The Training Coordinator oversees BNL and NSLS training programs and requirements for long term users.

User Administration

User Administration staff provide guest appointments, safety orientation, BNL identification badges, temporary key access cards, and temporary radiation dosimeters to facility users. Responsibilities also include administration of the proposal program, preparation of the annual facility report, maintenance of the NSLS User Access Policy and related procedures, and coordination of the annual Users' Meeting and Workshops.

Users' Executive Committee (UEC)

The Users' Executive Committee is an external organization which provides an organized framework to communicate user needs or concerns to NSLS management. It serves to promote and encourage research through organized discussions among facility users, provides a channel for communication with other synchrotron user groups, advocates the role of synchrotrons in the greater scientific enterprise, and provides a channel for communication with many federal agencies.

User Science Program Support

The Scientific Program Support section works with users to develop new and expand existing science programs and coordinates with the Beamline and Detector/Control sections to implement and refine new synchrotron techniques.
